Olfactory memory
Kecil Isalnd
I still remember the feeling of abandonment I felt on the day I left the island, on that little boat that Malaysians call a speed boat…. moving away from the beaches of Kecil Island.
I think it is the place in the world that comes closest to paradise on earth, including the snake.
One morning on the beach of the small island “Kecil,” I saw a little green snake that was climbing a bush, it was long and very thin and hypnotically bright green. I took the cute little snake by the tail as they do in documentaries and waved it around a couple of times like a lasso. Two Malaysians who worked for the nearby resort came running up and politely advised me to run away…. I had caught one of the 10 most dangerous snakes in the world by the tail!
At night in the bungalow where I slept you could hear squirrels, unbelievable but true, eating mangoes. It was not so much the noise of their chewing that was the problem, but the thud that the mango made when it fell on the roof of the bungalow: it woke you up with your heart in your throat!
There is no beauty in the world comparable to the coral reefs of Kecil Island, a unique marine fauna, where you can dive and swim clinging to a giant turtle by being transported into a sapphire-blue sea, and then rise again to find a pristine nature of tropical flowers and fruits with a sweet and enveloping scent … imagining that you are truly in paradise.
